Message to My Boys from 40
We gotta be alone
And we gotta be together
Take time to yourself
Hold it close against your chest
Be your greatest weirdest self
Take it out into the world
Of lakes and stars, cities and kids
Hold back at times if you must
But beware doing it too much
Take chances in life and love
Remember how you started
Think of all the early days
Who was there but your mother
Teaching respect for one another
With love and yoga for two brothers
Remember your struggles
And that you overcame them
These are the experiences on which to draw
Feel the hurt, take your notes and move on
Remember the good times and live to make more
When you’re heart aches bad
It’s a sign you have a big one
When it breaks, there’s nothing worse
Say your prayers to yourself and yourSelf first
Then pick your head up, act, and allow it to turn
Always apologize for crimes and mistakes
Never apologize for being yourself
That we are similar to others is the truth
That we are different is also the truth
Embrace yours and other’s realities too
Think of them when you are alone
Other places and other faces
Know that from afar you can’t know them
Only if you go see them, hear them, sense what it’s like to be them
These are the things that brew beautiful internal seasons
